JOB TITLE:   FULL TIME DEATH INVESTIGATOR

 

Receives notification of deaths from agencies and outside parties and determines if jurisdiction is within the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office criteria.

 

  1. Conducts death investigations to obtain information and evidence to assist Medical Examiners with the determination of the cause and manner of death. Directs the recovery, transportation, and processing of bodies and related evidence.
  2. Collects on-site scene information and evidence to include the drawing of bodily fluids and specimen, taking pictures, securing physical evidence on the body or within proximity of the body, and noting other physical evidence or circumstances relevant to the death.
  3. Responds to various scenes of death including traffic fatalities, industrial deaths, SIDS and infant deaths, overdoses, undetermined, suspicious, water related, heat, and environmental exposure deaths. Conducts doll reenactments on cases of infant deaths when needed to determine cause and manner of death.
  4. Investigates the physical and medical aspects of natural deaths by telephone when appropriate. Conducts interviews eliciting pertinent past and present history from persons associated with the decedent.
  5. Obtains and reviews medical histories and records from private physicians or health care agencies. Prepares written reports of the investigation. Communicates and consults with law enforcement personnel, funeral homes, and other agencies to expedite disposition of the case. Coordinates with organ donor agencies to facilitate requests for organ and tissue donations.
  6. Attends various training programs to maintain high standards and implement new methods of investigation. Gives sworn testimony when necessary in a deposition or before a court or other legal tribunal.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

 

  1. Minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  2. Must possess and maintain a valid Louisiana driver’s license with a good driving record.
  3. Previous experience, including internships, working in the field of forensic investigation, nursing, law enforcement (detective, evidence technician) or in a directly related field. Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and pathophysiology.
  4. As a condition of hire, certification as a Diplomat of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (D-ABDMI) must be obtained within the first 18 months of employment.
  5. Working Conditions: Sufficient strength, physical, and emotional stability to work under adverse conditions. Hours are full-time and includes holidays, nights, and weekends. Shift work is required. Must work with decedents in a decomposed state and understand and perform the complex task of removing decedents from diverse and difficult death scenes.
  6. Must be able to lift and carry 100 pounds.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to maintain effective working relationships with peers and supervisors; Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions; Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

JOB TITLE:   FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST

RESPONSIBILITIES

The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office is currently seeking a full time forensic pathologist to join our team. Qualifications include a completion of an accredited forensic pathology fellowship and the ability to attain a Louisiana license to practice medicine through the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (www.lsbme.la.gov).

The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office is a state of the art facility that opened in 2012. It is located in the heart of St. Tammany Parish. Besides the autopsy and death investigation divisions, the building also houses a DNA laboratory, which serves the entire parish as well as the division for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners. Most full time death investigators are ABMDI trained and certified. The office also uses a web based medicolegal death investigation software: MDI log. We also provide autopsy services for several surrounding parishes. The average workload of each pathologist is approximately 250 autopsies per year. Cases vary with regards to manner of death but are generally reflective of our suburban and rural locale.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING PROGRAM:

Successful completion of an accredited medical school with completion of residency training in Anatomic Pathology followed by an ACGME accredited Fellowship in Forensic Pathology, licensed to practice Medicine and Surgery in the State of Louisiana as governed by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.

 

DUTIES:

 

  1. Performs medico-legal autopsies authorized by the coroner, being on call for death investigations and to oversee field investigators while on call.
  2. Interacts with local law enforcement and other agencies in death and scene investigations. Determines cause and manner of death for all coroner cases.
  3. Provides expert witness testimony in both criminal and civil cases.

JOB TITLE:   SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) Nurse or Practitioner, PRN/Contract

 

The Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) nurse, also known as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), or practitioner will provide timely, non-judgmental compassionate care to all patients who have experienced a recent sexual assault. This will include a medico-forensic exam, maintaining chain-of-custody with evidence, offering prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychosocial follow-up, as well as support and participation in legal proceedings. The SAFE/SANE will interface with medical professionals, law enforcement agencies, criminal justice personnel, victim advocacy, and external support agencies that provide services to victims of crime and violence and must be able to collaborate well within a multidisciplinary team. As a specially trained SAFE, one will have the responsibility for providing patients with complete information about choices so patients can make informed decisions about the care they want to receive. Position reports to SANE/SAFE Program Coordinator.

 

Minimum qualifications:

 

  1. Graduate of an accredited school of Registered Nursing
  2. Current, unrestricted Louisiana State Registered Nursing license
  3. Two years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in a clinical setting
  4. Completion of Adult/Adolescent SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Training (both didactic & clinical) through the IAFN (International Association of Forensic Nursing) or other approved training course within 30 days of hire
  5. Completion of the Pediatric/Adolescent SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Training (both didactic & clinical) through the IAFN (International Association of Forensic Nursing) or other approved training course within 1 year of hire
  6. Must meet regional residential requirement for response time
  7. Willingness to provide care to all patients regardless of age, gender, race, religion, disability, country of origin, or any other defining factor
  8. Flexibly work on-call hours including predominantly weekends, nights & occasionally holidays

 

Preference given to:

 

  1. Experienced SANEs who have completed clinical training
  2. SANEs/SAFEs who have completed both Adult/Adolescent & Pediatric/Adolescent training
  3. Candidates with SANE-A &/or SANE-P certification
  4. RNs with a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)
  5. Candidates with current BLS through the American Heart Association
